Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director General of the World Health Organization, came with senior executives from the six largest medical publishers to announce that the publishers will give those in the developing world access their material electronically for free or at very low cost. This, Dr. Brundtland pointed out, is a benefit of globalization. Those who have had no access to current health research can now have access almost equal to that of those in London or New York. A desert can become a garden. Dr. Brundtland came to BMA House partly because the BMJ Publishing Group has been at the forefront of providing free access and partly because, one of the executives, helped broker the deal.
