Safeguarding the health of young African children and their families is the primary motivation of research at the KEMRI-Wellcome Research Programme. With a long-standing commitment to scientific capacity strengthening, it has established itself as an internationally renowned research centre tackling malaria and other important diseases.Every year more than 10 million children under the age of five die in developing countries, nearly a million from malaria alone. Every day more than 2500 people die of malaria, most of them children. It is these kinds of statistics that drive the work of the KEMRI-Wellcome (Kenya Medical Research Institute) Research Programme. The Programme is located at sites in Kilifi, an hour's drive north of Mombasa on the coast, and in the capital Nairobi. Kilifi is the major centre of clinical and epidemiological research, and is also home to the Programme's Director, Professor Kevin Marsh, and the Director of KEMRI Centre for Geographic Medicine Research-Coast, Dr Norbert Peshu
