It's an electronic controlled vocabulary thesaurus which consists of sets of terms (named descriptors) on medical sciences in a hierarchical structure. It was created to be used for indexing documents, as also on searching and it's used on MEDLINE/PubMED, a relevant biomedical journals database. It also has a separated thesaurus called Supplementary Concept Records.
